What do I need to know about buying a camping tent?
I'm shopping for camping tents 10x10 around for car camping (not backpacking). I have seen online at REI, Campmor, EMS, Sierra Trading ... and at the shop at Walmart and Dick's Sporting goods. I've compared the features so I know what is usually available. I'm trying to find out why there was such a big variance in prices ... what the value of a marquee $ 200 vs. a $ 80 one with similar features. (Is the material) I'm looking for advice others and experience!
Things like double-layer fabric, sealed and layer ripstop fabric makes for a better tent is more durable and that will keep you warm and dry. Same goes for aluminum poles and stakes. I think that really gave REI best value for money, especially their campdome series - I had one for years and still in very good condition. They are also very easy to make. If you plan to use more than one or two times, a tent quality is worth the money. Sure, you can get a Motel 6 from the tent, but I think the Holiday Inn Express is worth a few dollars. I do not recommend "Four Seasons" of tents (like the Mountain Hardware or North Face) unless you've got $ $ to burn or plan to use it more than you use your bed.
