Are fiberglass handle Axes as good as wood handled ones?
I have an old wood handle ax and I like it, but its pretty old and the head isn't as secure as it used to be. I was looking at some axes the other day and the store only had fiberglass handle ones. The handle is much lighter than the head, I was wondering if this has any effect? It seems like it would be harder to swing the ax since with a lighter handle the weight isn't distributed as well.
A few winters ago, I split nearly all my firewood by hand and I heat exclusively with wood. I split sbout 6 cords of wood. I used an ax with a wooden handle. I also had two other tools I condidered indesposible.
I had a maul and a splitting wedge. The maul had a fibreglass handle. I didn't swing the maul as much as the ax, however, I considered the fibreglass handle to be superior in nearly every respect.
The main reason I considered the maul and wedge necessary is this: there are times that you get your ax "caught" in a stick you are splitting. If you can hit the back of the axe with a maul, you risk spreading the hole through which the handle passes in the ax head. Consequently, a maul and wedge is needed to free a stuck ax. In my mind anyway.
Since then, I have purchased my wood cut, split and delivered for about $220 Cdn a cord. Eventually, when my kids get old enough to help, I'm going to head back to the woods to get my own firewood.
Oh... to answer the question specifically? Go fibreglass. They last forever, and swing about the same as wood. Get a maul and wedge.... wedges are about impossible to find, and are expensive.... do NOT get the plastic wedges as they are for felling trees, not splitting.
